Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
