A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
