Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped our Contemporary World
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks laboring for three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of processed timber could be produced within a week.”
Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, that converted logs into boards with almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial and cultural dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part transformed the rotary movement into vertical motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral motion feeding the log to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that the machine acted in a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending motion while advancing on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental parts.”
