An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
